The Dalai Lama says "Calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence". When life is hectic, busy, or chaotic how can we keep from feeling like a ship being tossed in the waves, out of control? Think of life like a rip tide- if you don't struggle and you go with the flow, everything works out. But if you fight against it you can get knocked around, fatigued, and maybe even sucked under.
I like to check in with my body to see where I feel the effects of stress, lack of sleep, poor nutrition etc. (my neck, my back, my eyes, a migrane) and then listen to what my own internal compass tells me to do to fix it. The acronym I remeber is : SODA
When you notice those signals of choas and stress creeping up on you:
Stop- Whatever you are doing, stop.
Observe- Breathe easliy and sit with what you are doing and notice how it feels
Detach- If you step outside the situation and think hmmmm, my lip is twitching. Interesting, what might that be telling me rather than freaking out because you cannot control your lip, it becomes less stressful.
Adapt- Respond to the situation by changing it or changing your attitude about it.
The belief that circumstances are out of our control creates a sense of dis-ease. When we remind ourselves that we control the thoughts and beliefs we are choosing suddenly life becomes much less stressful.
We can belike a duck who is calm on the surface but whose little legs are padding like carzy under the water, but remember " A man of calm is like a shady tree. People who need shelter come to it- Toba Beta"
