The true self is the part of us that does not change to reflect external circumstances. It is internally sourced rather than a reflection of external expectations. As Eckhart Tolle describes, it is the dimension of self that is deeper than thought. True self is in the now not in the past or future. How do we recognize the difference between true self and ego?
Reminding ourselves to check in with our physical body is a great step. We all have physical sensations when things are really right or really wrong. We might notice the hair stand up on our neck as we go down an unfamiliar alley or the sense of fullness and warmth in our chest as we accomplish a goal. Getting attuned to where your bodies shows you its true nature is a mindful practice that strengthens the connection with true self.
Sometimes, the true self is more easily found through journaling or art. Allowing this type of free flow creativity is wonderful for touching the spirit.
